Meet Nadiia from Bearsden. She has embraced walking as part of her daily routine using the BetterPoints app. She is finding balance, boosting her wellbeing and enjoying the rewards of a more active lifestyle.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your interests, where you're based, or what you do for work?
My name is Nadiia. I’m a busy mum of three (and a dog!) and I work in tech, specialising in big data. I’m fortunate that my role offers flexibility, so I often use my lunch break to walk the dog or pop to the shops. Working from home means I make a conscious effort to step outside during the day to clear my head and get some movement in.
How did you first hear about BetterPoints, and what motivated you to take part?
I first heard about BetterPoints East Dunbartonshire on social media, but I joined a little later after spotting the BetterPoints app through the EDLC gym app. It reminded me about the campaign and encouraged me to sign up.
Since joining have you changed how you usually travel? If so, how?
Since joining, I’ve made a conscious effort to walk more, particularly into the town centre to do a small top-up shop or to grab a coffee instead of automatically driving. At first, those journeys felt a bit too far to walk, but once I found a route I enjoy, it quickly became part of my routine. Now I often take my dog with me and head out for a lunchtime coffee.
Have you discovered any new places in East Dunbartonshire or nearby as a result of walking, cycling, or using public transport instead of driving?
Yes, walking more has helped me notice routes and spots I might otherwise have driven past or never visited at all. It feels like I now know all the shortcuts and walking routes around Bearsden!
You mentioned walking more - what inspired that change, and how has the experience been for you?
Working from home inspired me to use my lunch break more intentionally. I now try to leave the house every day for a short walk. It gives me a mental reset, some exercise and helps break my workday. What started as a small change has become a habit I really value and enjoy.
What benefits have you noticed from leaving the car at home - physically, mentally, socially, or in terms of time?
Mentally, it helps me clear my mind and return to work feeling refreshed. Physically, I’m more active during the day rather than sitting in front of the PC and only moving to get a fresh cuppa. It’s also enjoyable, especially when I bring my dog along.
What have you enjoyed most about being part of the campaign?
I’ve really enjoyed the reward aspect of the campaign, as well as the visual information in the app showing how much CO₂ and NO₂ I’ve helped avoid by walking. Seeing that impact motivates me to push a little further.
Have you spent any of your BetterPoints yet? If so, how? Or do you have plans for them?
Yes, I did spend my first £2 immediately - I treated myself to a coffee.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience or the campaign?
The campaign has encouraged me to rethink everyday journeys and realise that walking is often more achievable than I thought. It’s been a positive change for both my wellbeing and my daily routine.
